First Communion Baptized Catholic children in the 2nd grade or older who have not celebrated First Communion are required to prepare for and celebrate their First Reconciliation (Confession) prior to their participation in the First Communion program. The process beings with an interview with Father Braida. The purpose of the interview is to assess the readiness of the child. Prior to entry into the First Communion preparation process, children are expected to know the Sign of the Cross, Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary and Glory Be; attend Mass weekly and use their rainbow covenant envelopes; have completed one year of faith formation classes and demonstrate a basic understanding of baptism, covenant, and Jesus. Once children are accepted into the program, they will attend seven sacramental preparation sessions with their families and weekly faith formation sessions with their peers. First Communion is celebrated the end of April or the first of May. R.C.I.A. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults The Rite of Christian Initiation is a faith conversion process. Unbaptized adults wishing to become Catholic begin their journey with a time of inquiry. During the catechumenate phase of their preparation, participants are dismissed from Mass after the Homily to meditate on the Scripture readings with the RCIA team. Sponsors join the group for the catechetical sessions, which focus on teachings and particular issues in the Catholic Church. During Lent the participants begin more intense spiritual preparation, including a retreat, for their upcoming celebration of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. The initiation sacraments are most generally celebrated at the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday) and followed by a parish reception. Our Pastoral Minister and her team of catechists direct the process. Call the parish office if you would be interested in taking part in this process as a candidate, sponsor or catechist.
